In the late 1970s, many parts of Kerala were facing deep poverty. In several poor communities, parents had to leave home early for daily wage labor, and many children were left without proper care or access to education. As a result, a number of children spent their time outside school and were exposed to unhealthy environments and wandering lifestyles.
In the coastal village of Kovalam, where many people belonged to Dalit and other socially marginalized communities, the main sources of livelihood were stone crushing, coir making, and fishing. Due to lack of education and limited opportunities, the community faced several social challenges such as poverty, alcoholism, and domestic violence.
Seeing these conditions, Pastor Noble Gillion felt a strong concern to do something meaningful for the society. At that time, he was working as a high school teacher. One evening during a time of prayer, he felt called to dedicate his life to serving people. Responding to this call, he resigned from his job and committed himself to serving humanity without discrimination of caste, creed, or religion.
He began caring for both the spiritual and physical needs of people, especially among Dalit and socially marginalized communities. By reaching out to those who were often neglected by society, he sought to bring dignity, compassion, and hope to many lives.
During this time, his sister, Mrs. Flower Christy, encouraged and supported him in expanding this work. Gradually, many well-wishers joined this noble mission. Recognizing the need for an organized structure to continue and strengthen the work, Christunilayam was formally established in 1974.
